Create and manage tax return delivery templates

note icon

Note

This article applies to firms in the US.

Tax return delivery templates let you set up a tax return delivery package once and reuse it for any client. A template can hold the intro, approval, invoice placement, email message and reminders, so you don’t have to set them up on every delivery.

Your existing intro templates are now tax return delivery templates, with the intro already filled in. Add the other sections you need.

What a template includes

A template can set up to five sections of a delivery package:

  • Intro: the introductory message, with formatting, account and contact shortcodes , images and embedded videos

  • Approval: whether your client needs to approve the tax return , and whether any contact or the first contact approves it

  • Invoice placement: where the invoice appears in the package

  • Email message: the custom message your client gets in the notification email

  • Reminders: automatic reminder emails until your client completes all required steps

You can leave any section empty. The template list shows how many sections each template sets, for example, 3 of 5 set. A template with no sections set shows Nothing set and can’t be applied.

Note

Only a firm owner, admin, or employee with the Manage templates access right can create a tax return delivery template.

To create a tax return delivery template:

  1. Go to Templates > Firm templates from the sidebar menu, then click the Tax return delivery tab.

  2. Click Create template.

  3. Enter the template name.

  4. Fill in the sections you want the template to set.

  5. Click Save changes.

If you leave the template with unsaved changes, TaxDome asks whether to save or discard them. Each field is described in the tax return delivery template field reference .

You can also create a template while preparing a delivery. In the Apply template dialog, click New template. The template opens in a new tab, and once you save it, it appears in the dialog marked New.

Apply tax return delivery templates

To apply a template to a delivery package:

  1. Open a draft tax return delivery .

  2. Click Apply template at the top of the left panel.

  3. Select a template and apply it. The dialog shows the sections each template sets and marks the template already applied to this delivery. Once you have more than six templates, you can also search them.

TaxDome copies the sections the template sets into the delivery and leaves the other sections as they are. If the delivery already has content in some of those sections, the dialog shows Some settings will be replaced and lists them.

You can then edit any section in that delivery. Your changes don’t affect the template, and later changes to the template don’t affect deliveries it was already applied to.

Note

The invoice placement must fit the delivery. For example, After the intro needs an intro, and After review, before signing needs signature requests. If it doesn’t fit, the Invoice step shows Needs review, and you can send the delivery once you choose a valid position.
